President’s Message November 2025

Posted by WebsiteChair1 on 11/03/2025 12:00 am - President's Message

Dear ASCE Houston Branch Members,

Fall has finally arrived, and I hope you’re all enjoying these cooler temperatures as much as I am!

At our October Branch meeting, we were honored to hear from Coalter Baker, Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Protection District (GCPD), who provided updates on the progress and ongoing efforts along the upper Texas coast to deliver critical protection from storm surge. Through the combined efforts of the GCPD, the Texas General Land Office, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Coastal Texas Project will establish multiple lines of defense. When completed, coastal barrier initiatives—such as the well-known “Ike Dike”—will significantly reduce flood risks for some of our region’s most vital economic centers.

October has been a busy month for our Branch, with numerous Younger Member and Institute socials, technical sessions and tours, STEM volunteering opportunities, and we had the kickoff of our 2025-26 Mentorship Program. This past week, the EWRI Houston Chapter hosted its 5th Annual Conference, a full-day event featuring speakers from nearly twenty public agencies, non-profits, and academic institutions. Discussions focused on emergency communications, infrastructure planning, and regional resiliency—showcasing the collaborative spirit of our profession.

Looking ahead, our November Branch Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 18th, from 5:00–7:00 PM at The Ballroom at Tanglewood. This will be our Annual Joint Societies Meeting, and this year we’re thrilled to have a record 18 participating engineering-related organizations! The event will begin with a cash bar, so please arrive early to network and connect with fellow professionals. Our keynote speaker will be Chuck Wemple, Executive Director of the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC). I look forward to seeing you all there!

As always, I welcome input from all our members—if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy and restful Thanksgiving!

Warm regards,

Anna Chamberlain, PE, CFM, ENV SP

President
