President’s Message August 2025

Posted by VPComm on 08/04/2025 12:00 am - President's Message

Dear ASCE Houston Branch,

Can you believe summer vacation is almost over? Things usually ramp up (including traffic!) this time of year as parents get their children ready to return to school. Just this past weekend, several ASCE members volunteered at the Mayor’s Back to School & Health Fair at the George R. Brown Convention Center. They put us to work at the check-in tables, and it was a joy to greet families as they walked in to access resources such as school supplies and health screenings. If volunteering makes you smile, check out the next opportunity at the Houston Community ToolBank here.

If was a blast to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day at the beginning of summer, an event we co-hosted with WTS. It was a special time to celebrate and hear from some of the industry’s leaders. If you were in attendance, you probably came away inspired and excited, as I did. Special thanks to the phenomenal Committee that pulled this all together, the panelists for sharing their career journeys with us, and ASCE’s Past President Marsia Geldert-Murphey for flying in to be our keynote speaker.

The summer was not void of tragedy though, as we all learned with horror the devastation the Fourth of July weekend floods brought to Central Texas. The loss of lives and livelihoods is heart-wrenching. ASCE’s mission is to lead the civil engineering profession to sustainably advance and protect the health, safety and welfare of all. I am happy that our profession takes up the daily call to uphold public safety, and I know that it will take all of us to thoughtfully craft solutions and policies to mitigate disasters like these. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected communities and families.

There is still more summer to go and lots of events on our calendar (just scroll down), including our annual joint luncheon with the Houston Contractors Association, which is set for Thursday 8/28 at the Junior League – register here. The end of the fiscal year for our Branch is fast-approaching, which means we are looking to secure volunteers for various Committee positions for the next year. If you want to get involved, simply drop me an email.

Sincerely,

Johnny Kim, PE, CFM
