Kirsten Rice
Kirsten Rice graduated in 2014 with her Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC), where she also earned her Bachelors in Civil and Environmental Engineering. At USC, she spent five years in the Environmental Engineering Laboratories researching topics such as algae biodiesel and low-tech water treatment. While pursuing her civil engineering degree, Kirsten received several awards for academic and research achievements, including acceptance into Tau Beta Phi Engineering Honor Society; being named a national Discovery Scholar and Provost Undergraduate Research Fellow; receiving the Order of the Laurel and Palm for Exemplary Leadership and Excellent Scholarship; and being elected Captain of the USC Marathon Team. Kirsten has experience in both the public and private sectors, including founding her own non-profit organization. She has worked and studied in Rawanda and Uganda. Most recently, Kirsten received a National Geographic Young Explorers Grant to travel to rural Rwanda and implement a large-scale version of her research on biosand filtration. She and two partners recently completed construction of the project in the Rwamagana District.
