President's Message February 2025

Posted by VPComm on 02/10/2025 2:39 pm - President's Message

Dear ASCE Houston Branch,

Hope you enjoyed the historic snowfall a couple weeks ago, as we are back to business as usual in Houston with humidity and mild temperatures. The cold spurt coincided with our January Branch meeting, which we had to cancel. Fortunately, we were able to reschedule our original panel of speakers to our February Branch meeting, which will take place this Wednesday (2/5) at the Ballroom at Tanglewood. Online registration closes today at noon, so get your tickets here. Panelists include Shashi Kumar of Missouri City, Frank Simoneaux of Baytown, and Lorenzo Wingate of Pearland.

Last month, I got the exciting opportunity to be a Future City Competition judge. This is a middle school STEM program of DiscoverE, and this year’s challenge was to build a sustainable floating city. I was impressed with their innovative ideas and polished communication skills. The future is in good hands! See some familiar ASCE faces below.

Speaking of volunteer opportunities – check out the calendar of events below. There are at least four STEM volunteer events happening this month alone. No shortage of ways to invest ourselves in the next generation of engineers!

Have you joined a local Institute event yet? The Houston Branch has six active Institutes that provide technical sessions and social hours to help hone your craft and build your professional network. Don’t miss out!

As always, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions for the Branch. Sincerely,

Johnny Kim, PE, CFM
