October 2024 President's Message
Dear ASCE Houston Branch,
I am deeply honored to serve as your President for the 2024-2025 term. Our Branch consists of 3,400+ members and covers 13 counties, six university student chapters, and six local Institute chapters. All that to say – there are not very many branches quite like ours, and we have our members and past 80 years of dedicated volunteer leadership to thank for that, especially our immediate past president Alexa Nichols.
At last month’s Leadership Orientation for the Branch, volunteers crafted goals for their respective committees, which I am eager to see worked out this year. Goals at the Branch level include the following:
· Form at least 10 mentoring relationships in the inaugural year of the Branch’s mentorship program.
· Increase monthly Branch meeting attendance through effective programming and communications.
· Coach our student chapter leaders to lead their organizations successfully and to transition into professional life.
· Increase collaboration between the Branch and the local Institutes.
If you want to get involved in any or all of the above, I welcome your support. I wish all the Board members success in their endeavors on behalf of the Branch.

At our September Branch meeting, Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Commissioner Dexter McCoy provided an update on the work of the precinct and challenged us to keep our posterity in mind as we build our communities. I believe this is integral to our vocation in the civil engineering industry and brings meaningfulness to our profession. On a related note, we awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit to Ron Reichert, who exemplifies this culture of investing in the next generation through his service to local university students. He received a standing ovation!
The October Branch meeting is just around the corner. Our keynote speaker is Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, who was recently named the 2024 Public Official of the Year by the Society. You don’t want to miss it - register here!
I look forward to serving you this year, and connecting with you at Branch events and in the community. Please reach out with any questions or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Johnny Kim, PE, CFM
