Ship Channel Bridge Asphalt Overlay and Toll Plaza Demolition

Mr. Jesus M. Olivas, P.E. - Engineer at HR Green

This project included the Plan Preparation and Design of bridge related maintenance for the Sam Houston Tollway east from IH-10 to SH-225. Jesus developed Asphalt Overlay Plans for the Main Span of the Houston Ship Channel bridge. Jesus delineated the limits and provided a plan, typical section, and details as necessary for the asphalt overlay. Jesus performed an onsite review of the existing Houston Ship Channel Bridge and the Jacinto Port Bridge structures to determine if any additional maintenance items needed to be addressed in addition to those recommended in the latest Bridge Inspection Report. Jesus provided details for repair of bridge abutment backwalls, wingwalls, approach slabs, bearing pads, bridge rail, joints, miscellaneous structural details and pavement details to facilitate repairs to both bridges and their approaches.

Jesus also developed a traffic control plan that included freeway closures, freeway single lane closure and detour plan to facilitate construction and mobility in the area. Jesus also worked with HCTRA to reconfigure the EZ tag lanes at the Toll Plaza and eliminate the attended lanes and coin lanes and effectively removing the Toll Plaza canopy.

Jesus specializes in transportation and stormwater management. His experience includes extensive storm sewer design analyses for the City of Houston utilizing TP100, TP101, new Chapter 9, and HouStorm and for Harris County Toll Road Authority and TxDOT utilizing WinStorm. Jesus has also worked as the lead design engineer on transportation projects ranging in size from local streets to major tollways where he has provided construction phase services. He has experience with HCTRA and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and familiarity with TxDOT design standards and criteria. Jesus received a Civil Engineering Degree from the University of Houston in 1997 and has worked at HR Green for the last 14 years.
