Younger Member's Report
Happy October Everyone,
This time of the year marks a transition in weather for the Houston area and a transition in leadership within the ASCE Houston Branch. Please welcome our 2016-2017 Younger Member Chairs as they kickoff another exciting year for the Younger Member Forum. Our YM Chairs are always looking to engage so if you know one or see one, give them a warm welcome and feel free to share ideas. Visit the ASCE- Houston website for photos and contact info.
This year’s calendar is filling quickly. We hope you take your ASCE membership to the next level and show your support by attending a few of the events you’ll see announced over the coming months.
I’d like to thank our ASCE members who volunteered at the University of Houston Resume Fair for Civil and Environmental Engineering students on September 17th. The event was well attended and students were prepared and more confident going into a recent campus career fair. I’ve received positive feedback from students and mentors regarding their experience. Keep an eye out for the Spring Resume Fair.
Our first event for the month of October will be a joint social event with the Young Professionals in Transportation (YPT) on Friday, October 21st from 6pm-10pm.
We are fortunate enough to have been invited back to YPT’s second annual Pub Crawl by way of the Houston Metro Rail line. Last year, over 35 young professionals stopped at 3 different bars while utilizing one of the State’s most efficient uses of transportation and we expect an even greater turnout this year. Registration is $10 and can be completed via the link below. Be sure to register by October 19th at 5:00 PM. Details on locations are coming soon.

Our second event for the month will be a joint community service event with TAWWA & WEAT. ASCE and our partnering organizations would like to invite you to volunteer at the Buffalo Bayou Clean Up on Saturday, October 22nd from 8am to 12pm. This has been a great partnership in the years past providing members with the opportunity to restore and protect one of Houston’s most widely utilized and visible public waterways. Breakfast, lunch, and all the necessary materials will be provided by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s Park Office. So please be sure to rsvp at www.tawwa.org/group/southeast_texas by October 17th and show your support on the day of the event! The group will meet at the Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s Park Office at 1803 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX. Please email Lizanne Douglas at [email protected] with questions.
Last but not least, our next technical event will be a tour of the Pavestone Plant on November 3rd from 11:30am-1pm. David Hasness, regional engineer at Pavestone LLC for over 14 years, will be giving a presentation focusing on Segmental Retaining Walls followed by a plant tour. David will also be touching on his permeable pavers product (that you may already be familiar with) as it pertains to Low Impact Development and how to utilize the product for underground detention storage. If you have any questions about the event, please contact Mahsa Arastoo at [email protected]. As always, PDHs will be provided upon request! We look forward to seeing you all out there!
