Younger Member's Report
Happy June Everyone,
Hope everyone is staying dry so far and ready for a busy summer with ASCE!
First and foremost, as I formally congratulate all of our scholarship recipients this month that were mentioned at the May branch meeting, I also want to speak for all of the younger member group in thanking all of our sponsors for the Top Golf Event this past weekend, specifically Benchmark Engineering. Though we did have a few people sign up at the last minute, I’m proud to say that over a third of the proceeds would not have been possible without these sponsorships, and I also want to thank William Saour and Seth Robinson, our two golf tournament co-chairs for making it all possible.
Secondly, as most of you may know by now, the 30th AIA Sandcastle Competition was scheduled to be held Saturday, June 4th. A total of sixty-six teams were competing for the Golden Bucket. The ASCE Houston Branch Team was ready to make the trip to East Beach, Galveston with a total commitment of 50 members. Unfortunately, the weather conditions did not allow the event to go on as scheduled. The ASCE Houston Branch Team met Sunday, June 5th at Lawrence Park to have a team BBQ to help boost moral after the cancelation. The ASCE Team was sponsored by MC2 Main Lane, Rinker, Dannenbaum, Jacobs, AIA Engineers, 5engineering, and IEA. Thank you to all our sponsors, and a special thank you to Brian Manning at MC2 Main Lane for constructing a specialized pump for the competition. The event may be rescheduled for late August or early October. Photos from the team practice held in early May and the Team BBQ are available online. I also want to thank everyone who came our two events last week, the tour of the Forterra Jersey Village Plant showcasing their OysterBreak product, and the social at the Karbach brewery with SAME, WEAT & AWWA.
For our second technical activity this month, on Thursday, June 16th from 11:00-1:00, we’ll be having our second annual tour of the Port of Houston facilitated by David Casebeer. PDH certificates will be available for this event as well, so if you’re interested, please sign up through our web portal and contact Mahsa Arastoo, our technical activities chair if you’re in need of additional information.
Lastly, as some of you may know by now, the ASCE international Conference on Transportation and Development is just around the corner, and Nick Norboge, the founder of the Young Professionals in Transportation in the Houston area has been kind enough to extend an invitation to us to attend their preconference event called TransportationCamp! Transportation Camp is a casual pre-conference event that brings together thinkers and doers in the fields of transportation and technology that are interested in the intersection of urban transportation and technology, and will take place at the Omni Houston Galleria Hotel (4 Riverway, Houston, TX 77056) from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The cost for the event is $25.00 and will include pre-conference registration and refreshments and the link to register is below. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Nick Norboge directly at [email protected].
