Younger Member's Report
Happy New Year Everyone,
Hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas and a safe and fun new year and is ready to start 2016. As January kicks off and we gear up for another successful year, let’s take a look at how we closed out 2015.
Throughout the first and second weeks of December, ASCE Younger Members participated in a volunteer activity, the bicycle build sponsored by CYCLE (Changing Young Children’s Lives through Education), an organization that has dedicated their time to improving literacy in Grades K – 3 in Title One schools in the Greater Houston area and awarded more than 144,000 bicycles to hard-working students. Volunteers had the opportunity to participate by assisting with the assembly of bikes or with a monetary donation on several different occasions. On December 9th, Younger Members teamed up with SAME for a joint happy hour event at Warehouse Bar & Chill on W. 11th St. in the Heights followed by our December Happy Hour Social at Howl at the Moon (joint event with YPT) from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Based on the feedback that I’ve received from both organizations, they were both pleased by our turnout and are definitely interested in having joint events in the future.
The first event we have planned for the month of January is a joint happy hour event with the Houston CPA Society’s Young Professional Group and Society of Petroleum Engineers Younger Member Group. The event will be held on Wednesday, January 27th at Big Eyed Fish (908 Henderson St., Houston, TX 77007) from 5:30 to 7:30. The patio area will be reserved so please arrive early to get a good seat. Drink specials will be served until 8:00 pm.
Secondly, one day following the joint happy hour event, the Younger Members will be participating in our 2nd annual Rinker Materials Concrete Plant Tour sponsored by Ron Reichert on Thursday January 28th, from 10:45 to 1:00 pm. Please arrive on time and expect a light lunch preceding the tour. Also keep in mind that the plant does operate heavy machinery and that personal protective equipment (steed-toed boots, vests, goggles, and hard hats) will be required. There will be extra goggles there for people who need them.
Last, but not least, I want to take the time to congratulate our very own Sarah Alvarez and Carrie French for passing the PE exam this last month! With the initiative to “raise the bar” getting more and more serious every year, we are all extremely proud of their accomplishment and are excited to see how they contribute to the industry with their new credentials. In addition, I want to congratulate Ashley Francis, P.E., C.F.M. for being selected as this year’s ASCE Young Engineer of the Year! Her accomplishments and career path thus far are certainly worthy of recognition and will be announced publicly at our E-week banquet next month.
As always, feel free to contact me directly with any questions.
