Younger Member's Report

Happy November Everyone,

First off, I want to thank everyone who participated in our October events last month. October 1^st and 2^nd wrapped up our annual civil engineering conference in San Marcos, and the feedback I’ve gotten from the majority of the younger members in attendance was more than positive, as it was a great opportunity for them to make helpful contacts for their careers. In addition, the Houston mayoral candidate forum on 10/13 gave both younger members and non-younger members the opportunity to hear from Steven Costello, one of the few actively practicing engineers to ever run for mayor, as well as Adrian Garcia, Marty McVey and Chris Bell. Special thanks to all of our mayoral candidates for sharing their time with our society.

This past month, on Friday, October 9^th, the ASCE younger members teamed up with the American Water Works Association (AWWA) & the Water Environment Association of Texas (WEAT) and hosted a tour of Star Pipe Products on Westhollow Parkway. The event consisted of a facilities tour, as well as a free lunch and presentation. Feel free to contact me directly if you haven’t already done so if you are in need of a PDH certificate for either of the sessions. All in all, the plant accommodated 30 people through the production process, so special thanks to Valetta Saldhana with WEAT for setting up the tour and coordinating with the facility staff. ASCE also had the privilege of teaming with up with the Young Professionals in Transportation for a Pub Crawl by way of the Houston Metro Rail on Friday, October 16^th. The event had a great turnout with several young professionals from both organizations and photos are available on our website.

This Friday, October 30^th, younger members will be teaming up with The Lighthouse of Houston to hold our next community service event, The Lighthouse of Houston Halloween Carnival for children who are blind or visually impaired. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5:30 to sign in and the event will begin at 6:30. What: The Lighthouse of Houston Halloween Carnival for children who are blind or visually impaired.

When to arrive: Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5:30 to sign in. The event will begin at 6:30.

What to wear: Please wear your Halloween costume! The children and staff will be wearing theirs too!

What to bring: We ask each volunteer to please bring one bag of individually wrapped Halloween candy for use in game booths and during carnival.

Where to park: Parking for Volunteers is available at the vacant Juvenile Detention center, located on Marston and West Dallas. Look for the Volunteer Parking sign.

Where to go when you arrive: All volunteers will sign in at the Dining Room. You may enter through the Community Services Entrance, the second set of double doors at 3602 West Dallas.

After the event: The event will end around 9 pm. Volunteers are free to leave once the booths and assignments have been picked up (around 9:15).

Last but not least, due to scheduling conflicts with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers, our annual P.E. luncheon will be taking place one month early this year! On Thursday, November 12^th, at 11:30 am at the Terracon office (11555 Clay Road, Suite 100). The presentation will be given by George Hartman, Engineer for Texas Board of Professional Engineers for over 12 years. The Luncheon will begin with a presentation over specifics of professional licensure application and conclude with a Q&A session. Moreover, four recent licensed professionals are available to give a brief rundown of what to expect in the exam day. Below is our list of four panelists for this year:
