Houston Branch Education & Outreach
One of the Branch’s key initiatives is to actively lead and participate in education and outreach activities for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). From our perspective, the Branch can have a significant positive impact on our community by promoting STEM and the civil engineering profession with K-12 students, and fostering strong professional relationships with our affiliated collegiate ASCE Student Chapters at Rice University, Prairie View A&M University, and University of Houston. Read below to see our current activities and future opportunities, and contact our Branch Vice President Education, Saud Memon, P.E, ENV SP, for more information:
University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering Resume Fair – Five Houston Branch members and practitioners volunteered at the University of Houston Spring 2015 Resume Fair hosted by the Cullen College of Engineering on Saturday, February 7. They reviewed the civil engineering students' resumes for format, consistency, subjectivity, grammar and spelling. This helped the students enhance their resumes to better market their career potential and provided them with networking opportunity with the engineers.
Science and Engineering Fair – Our Branch VP Education, Saud Memon, serves on the planning committee for the Houston Science and Engineering Fair. ASCE Houston Branch members recently volunteered their time as judges at the science fair on Saturday, February 28 where more than 900 students participated and presented their projects.
Future Opportunities – Don’t miss your chance to help with the following upcoming events:
-
Shadow the Engineer Days – firms are needed to host a group of 3 to 4 students for 2 hours. Students visit a firm to learn more about what it means to be an engineer and what it means to work in the professional world. Dates are being coordinated for both high school and collegiate audiences. Opportunities are limited based on the number of participating engineering companies.
-
Houston Children’s Festival (Saturday, March 28) – Help the Branch host a booth at the festival. Volunteers will run a children-friendly engineering activity like making popsicle stick bridges. ASCE and civil engineering educational materials are distributed to parents and kids.
-
Houston Hobby Fest (Saturday, April 11) – Similar to the Children’s Festival, Branch volunteers will run a children-friendly engineering activity at a booth. In the past, volunteers have built paper bridges and load-tested them with washers. ASCE and civil engineering educational materials are distributed to parents and kids.
-
Science Olympiad, I-SWEEEP (Saturday, May 9) – Sign up to volunteer at the International Sustainable World Energy, Environment, and Engineering Science Olympiad.
-
Career Presentations at Local Schools – Need volunteers to give engineering presentations at various middle and high schools in Houston and neighboring towns.
The Houston Branch Education Committee meets on third Monday of each month at 5:30pm at Arup at the address below. Contact Saud if you would like to be part of our education and outreach opportunities.
