Local News & Announcements
Welcome to the ASCE Houston Branch Newsletter of upcoming events, articles, jobs and more from our membership.
I hope that you and your families are doing well during this difficult time amid the growing health concerns from the novel Coronavirus (formally known as COVID-19). Since the issuance of the March Special Message, there has been an increase of individuals who have contracted COVID-19 and who have died of health complications from the virus. This news is hard to digest and it is even harder to digest when you know of someone that has passed away. I learned that Mrs. Mary Hammer Menzel passed away on Sunday, March 29th from health complications due to COVID-19. Mary was not an Engineer, however, she worked as a Business Consultant for several Civil Engineering Companies in the Houston Area. I knew Mary and she was one of the nicest individuals I’ve met in my life. Her husband, Mr. Roger Menzel, has contracted COVID-19 and he is in the hospital. Please keep Roger and the rest of his family in your prayers.
Several counties throughout the Houston Area have extended their “Stay-At-Home” Orders until April 30th to slow down the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, all-in person meetings and events during the month of April are postponed or cancelled until further notice. The Board of the ASCE Houston Branch will continue to monitor the situation and provide future updates.
On behalf of the Board, I appreciate each of you for being members of the ASCE Houston Branch. We value your health and safety. We will continue our efforts to serve you the best way we can.
I am available for any questions or comments about the ASCE Houston Branch, so do not hesitate to contact me.

Dream Big: K-12 STEM Resources
We hope everyone is taking the proper steps in helping minimize the spread of COVID-19. We value everyone’s family, friends and your health during this time. We know that a lot of kids (K-12th) are away from school for the next couple of weeks, so we thought we share just a few ideas that can add to your child’s YouTube, Reddit, TikTok and video game filled day. This link http://discovere.org/dreambig/activities has activities that range from designing a catapult to designing highway interchanges! We encourage you to please take a look at all the STEM activities that are offered on the website and for you to help your little ones with the activities. Also, there is a movie called Dream Big on Netflix. Dream Big showcases engineering marvels worldwide. From Dubai’s record-high skyscrapers to bridges soaring through clouds, audiences can experience the massive scale and forces of nature that challenge engineers. This amazing film is only 40 minutes long! Enjoy and stay safe!
