President's Message

Dear members,

The month of March marks the beginning of spring. Spring is the time when flowers begin to bloom and trees begin to grow. In Houston, the pollen from flowers and trees will fill the air and of course, we have Spring Break! During Spring Break, I encourage you to take time to reflect on our goals as an organization and what we have accomplished during the first six months of this fiscal year. In the beginning, our leadership team decided to focus on the following:

  • Goal 1: Increase interaction among members and guests at Branch events.
  • Goal 2: Promote membership engagement and retention of members from the local ASCE student chapters.
  • Goal 3: Improve communication with local elected officials to engage in a meaningful dialogue concerning civil engineering projects.
  • Goal 4: Expand our community service involvement throughout the Great Houston area.

I am quite amazed by all the activities and initiatives we’ve executed and supported so far. For example, I’ve seen our monthly Branch meetings grow to more than 140 people in attendance with up to 30 attendees from local ASCE student chapters. There is a positive buzz in the air with members networking with guests, students interacting with professional members, and more Past Presidents, Life, and Fellow members attending the monthly Branch meetings. Several Past Presidents sent me e-mails on how vibrant the monthly Branch meetings are becoming and they enjoy meeting colleagues and students at the meetings. Our leadership team has worked hard to improve the membership experience and Goals 1 and 2 are successfully being executed. I thank my team for their dedication and service to the ASCE Houston Branch.

I hope to see you at the March Branch Meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 11am-1pm at the HESS Club. Our keynote speaker is Mr. Ray Newby, P.G., Coastal Geologist, Texas General Land Office.

I am available for any questions or comments about the ASCE Houston Branch, so do not hesitate to contact me.
