President's Message

Dear members,

I can’t believe that the month of January went by so quickly. Well, you know what they say, “Time flies when you are having fun!” As President, I must admit that I am having lots of fun. I’ve heard that being a great top leader, a Great Chief, of any organization requires hard work, patience, and compassion. During my first run as President of another organization, I tried my best to be a good chief, but I lacked the capacity to be patient. I took a DISC personality test two years ago and I found out that my classical profile pattern is the “Creative Pattern”. As a “Creative” person, I am a perfectionist, a high achiever, and a change agent. I expected the same qualities from my team members and that caused friction within the team environment. This was not a fun experience, however, it was a great learning experience. I took an inward look at myself and I realized that not everyone is like me. Each team member is charting their own leadership journey and I must be patient enough to allow them to do so. Now, as President of the ASCE Houston Branch, I hope that my team members can describe me as a patient and caring leader. I have a great team and I thank them for their hard work so far this fiscal year.

During the month of February, we celebrate Houston Engineers Week from February 16-22, 2020. There are several volunteer activities and events the ASCE Houston Branch will take part in. For example, members will participate in the Run of Pi by running a 5K race to support K-12 STEM education. In addition, the branch will sponsor a table at the Outstanding Student Luncheon to be held at Rice University, where two branch leaders will attend to support engineering students receiving scholarships and awards. Finally, branch leaders will attend the Young Engineer of the Year Banquet and the Engineer of the Year Gala to support Ms. Sarah N. Alvarez, PE, CFM (2020 Edmund Friedman Young Engineer of the Year) and Mr. Steve Fitzgerald, PE, D.WRE. (2020 Houston Engineer of the Year). Both Sarah and Steve are ASCE Houston Branch members and I congratulate them both for their accomplishments.

Our Annual Past Presidents Meeting, this month’s branch meeting, will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 from 11am-1pm at the HESS Club during Houston Engineers Week. Our keynote speaker is Ms. Carrin F. Patman, Chair of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Harris County. I hope to see as many Past Presidents of the ASCE Houston Branch as possible at this meeting. It is always a pleasure to have Past Presidents in attendance at each Branch Meeting and especially at the Annual Past Presidents Meeting.

I am available for any questions or comments about the ASCE Houston Branch, so do not hesitate to contact me.

Howdy ASCE members, associate members, and younger members, and happy new year!

As most of you know, Engineer’s week is right around the corner, and I would like to take a moment to again congratulate Sarah Alvarez, P.E., CFM on being selected as this year’s Young Engineer of the Year for ASCE Houston! This award is well-deserved and we’re very grateful for everything that Sarah has done for the branch so far in her career.
