President's Message

Dear ASCE Houston members,

I am both honored and excited to be serving as your President for the 2023-2024 term. I'd like to start my term out by saying thank you to all of our volunteers including board members, committee chairs, and Institute chairs. The Branch is grateful to you for spending your time and energy with ASCE Houston. As incoming President, I attended the ASCE Presidents and Governors Forum along with over 100 Section and Branch Presidents, Region Governors, Society Directors, Society Presidential Officers, and Institute Leaders from around the world. The event provided opportunities to learn about ASCE resources, network with other ASCE leaders, and discuss best practices that would benefit our Branch. It was wonderful to meet other people just as excited about ASCE and what we can do for our members. You can see the awesome group of attendees (including the shorty in the front row that you may recognize) below.

Our September Branch Meeting, Awards Ceremony, and Officer Installation included Lesley Briones as our Keynote Speaker. She spoke about the new programs implemented in Harris County Precinct 4 and her philosophy as a leader. She stated that she looks for heart, hustle, and higher standards when choosing members of her team. These qualities are very similar to those I see in ASCE Houston volunteers. You may have noticed if you attended our September meeting virtually that our virtual Branch meetings now include a webcam! We are pleased to add this to our repertoire and look to continue to serve you, the members, in the best way possible.
As your President, I am here to serve the members of the ASCE Houston community. I am excited to see what the next year holds and am grateful for your faith in me.  Please know that I am open to suggestions and ways to improve to help serve you better, so if you have any, please send those my way.

Thank you,

Alexa Nichols, P.E.

OCTOBER 2023 KEYNOTE SPEAKER

On January 1, 2019, KP George was elected to serve as your Fort Bend County Judge. He was re-elected for a second term on November 8, 2022. As the County's top elected official, Judge George presides over the Commissioners Court, which oversees the County’s more than 3,000 employees and its nearly 500 million-dollar budget. Additionally, he serves as the Director of the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
Since taking office, Judge George has placed a heavy focus on homeland security and emergency management, transparency in government, youth empowerment, and improving the quality of life for citizens while building resiliency through infrastructure improvements.
Judge George is the first Fort Bend County Judge of South Asian descent. Prior to running for public office, George was a board-certified financial planner in Sugar Land. His passion for education and cultivating leadership in children led to his decision to run for the Fort Bend Independent School District School Board, of which he served two terms from 2014 to 2018.
Faith and family are priorities for Judge George. He is married to Sheeba George, they are the proud parents of three children.
As the executive of one of the fastest-growing and ethnically diverse counties in the United States, Judge George believes in caring for those who are vulnerable, creating a climate of hospitality, and making Fort Bend County a place of opportunity for everyone.

2023 ASCE TEXAS CECON

The ASCE Houston Branch had a great time at CECON (September 20-22), the Texas Section’s flagship annual conference. This year’s theme was “The Future is Now”, focusing on how engineers today create the world of tomorrow.

We are incredibly proud of the Two Houston Branch members who received Texas Section Awards this year. Tim Newton, PE, received the Lifetime Service Award, which is awarded only once every five years. It is conferred upon members who have diligently served the Texas Section for over 20-25 years. Patricia Frayre, PE, received the John A. Focht Jr. Citizen Engineer Award, which recognizes outstanding and continued dedication to the Texas Section.

The Houston Branch also extends gratitude to the Branch members who served on the CECON Planning Committee this year: John Mudd (CECON Co-Chair), Michael Bloom, Victoria Dieu, Bobby Nagel, Alexa Nichols, Farrah Rawashdeh, Ron Reichert, Layla Shawareb, and Bob Stevens.
