"Repairing the Houston Ship Channel Steel Bridge"

The Sidney Sherman Bridge in IH 610 East Loop over Houston Ship Channel is a major thoroughfare in east side of Houston. In June 2001, the bridge was struck by a ship crane that completely fractured the plate girder bottom flange at the center of the main span. Recently, severe corrosions were observed at the two ends of the bridge, causing flange fracture and large movements of the rocker bearings. The 2001 damage was repaired using the conventional cut-and-weld method typical for steel structures. The corrosion damage was repaired in 2020 with an innovative method that employs the Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC). This speech will present the designs and constructions of both repairs, discussing and comparing the thought processes from the structural and constructability point of views. Additional information of UHPC and considerations on maintenance friendly bridge design will also be briefly discussed.
