"Hurricane risk modeling of a portfolio of mission-critical assets using progressive failure simulation"

For mission-critical assets in hurricane-prone regions that are sensitive to operational disruption, probabilistic hurricane risk assessments can be performed to understand crucial vulnerabilities and develop mitigation strategies. During hurricane events, these facilities are vulnerable to different types of primary and secondary effects such as component and cladding damage, wind-driven rain intrusion, failure of mechanical and electrical systems, exposure to the exterior environment, etc. To properly assess the risk of operational disruption, detailed damage modeling is necessary.  In this project, we developed a progressive failure calculation engine and an associated consequence model to conduct a probabilistic hurricane risk assessment for a portfolio of mission critical assets. The damage calculation engine captures the progressive failure of each vulnerable component (e.g. roof-mounted equipment, roof deck, etc) during a time-dependent simulation. Refined vulnerability analysis was performed to the facility roofs, roof-mounted equipment and outside mechanical and electrical equipment using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. This analysis involved modeling static and dynamic forces using wind speed time histories and hazard curves Fragility curves are developed based on Monte Carlo simulations of hundreds of thousands of hurricane event to probabilistically account for the uncertainty in the demand and capacity of each component. The overall risk of downtime to each facility was quantified and physical retrofit/mitigation priorities for each site was developed to improve overall operation reliability based on cost-benefit analysis.

Speaker Bio: Armin Masroor, PhD, SE, PE, is a senior risk and resilience consultant in the Advanced Technology + Research (AT+R) group in Arup’s San Francisco office. Armin received his PhD in structural engineering from the State University of New York, University at Buffalo at 2012. He has a background in advanced structural analysis and design for extreme event scenarios such as air-blast loads, structural impact, and extreme natural hazards. His projects include the 181 Fremont Tower, Salesforce Tower, and Transbay Transit Center. His current project is a multi-hazard risk assessment and development of a resilience strategy for mission critical facilities for a confidential client around the world.
