"IH 10 WB AT SAN JACINTO RIVER BRIDGE BARGE STRIKE"

On Friday, September 20, 2019 Tropical Storm Imelda dumped 40 inches of rain on Texas causing major flooding in Houston. During the storm several loose barges struck the structures at IH10 and San Jacinto River damaging the westbound portion of the bridge.  The bridge was immediately shut down as TxDOT engineers assessed the damage. The IH10 westbound bridge carries three lanes with 8’ shoulders and it has an ADT of 123,000. Due to the bridge closure motorist traveling this major corridor was forced to take 15 mile detour each way. Immediately after the incident, the Texas Dept. of Transportation put together what it can be considered a master class in how to get an emergency project done safely, efficiently and ahead of schedule. Main goals of the emergency project were to put together a repair plan to restore the structural capacity of the damaged bridge and get the westbound bridge back to its original configuration.
