"Fire Integrity Analysis and Passive Fire Protection (PFP) Optimization"

Design of process modules, piperacks and occupied structures for accidental fire loads is critical for a facility’s operation, emergency planning, safe shutdown and evacuation strategy. Performance-based approach in fire response design of offshore and onshore structures has been successfully implemented using advanced numerical analysis tools and close collaboration between Safety, Structural, Construction and Operations teams. This approach involves an iterative analysis procedure considering interaction of load bearing (structural) and other systems (piping, electrical etc.). The refined analysis and optimization process ensures that PFP is only applied to critical structural elements and fire performance of protected systems are verified through analysis. In addition to reducing the risk, this precludes an overly conservative design recommending application of PFP in a broader area without analytical justification. The main advantages of reducing the application of PFP coating on non-critical members and equipment are cost savings and integrity management improvements during the life cycle of a facility. Improvements in analysis and design methods are expected to result in the application of PFP only to critical members without compromising safety.

Speaker Bio: Önder Akinci is a Principal Consultant and Global Technical Lead with Atkins Oil & Gas. He has a PhD degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from Purdue University and 19 years of experience in the evaluation and design of plant structures for blast, fire, impact/impulse and seismic loads. He was involved with the design and assessment of complex structures, pressure vessels, tanks and piping systems at oil and gas facilities, and power plants. Dr. Akinci has experience in Fire Integrity Analysis and PFP optimization of process modules, PFP specification and fire response verification of process safety critical systems. Dr. Akinci was the technical lead for several Blast Assessment and PFP Optimization projects in the US, Gulf of Mexico, Canada, West Africa, Offshore Australia and Caspian regions.
