Join your peers for the next SEI Houston Chapter Luncheon Technical Session:

"Finite Element Design of Buried Soil Structure Interaction Systems"

Abstract: Engineers are often able to compute consistent and accurate solutions of everyday problems using either hand calculations or spreadsheets. However, there are instances when the models are so complex and time consuming that it requires the assistance of a high functioning software program to analyze a problem. Through the use of finite element analysis, computers can model various systems and subdivide them it into smaller and simpler objects called elements. These discrete elements are able to be analyzed and re-assembled back into the larger system to solve the overall problem. This presentation will introduce you to CANDE: a free finite element program that was developed under the sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration in 1976 for the structural design and analysis of buried structures.

Speaker Bio:
Zach Moore is a design engineer at Contech Engineered Solutions in West Chester, Ohio.  Zach has over seven years of experience designing corrugated metal structures (predominately in Texas). He began his tenure at Contech as a co-op analyzing precast concrete arch structures using CANDE. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BSCE in 2011.  Zach has worked on some of Contech's most challenging applications ranging from aggregate/conveyor tunnels, railroad crossings, to airports in many challenging locations such as remote sites in central America and Alaska.
