"Unique FRP Anchoring Details Are Proof Tested by New Zealand’s Earthquakes"

Abstract: It is a rare opportunity to see the latest structural engineering advances tested by mother nature.  Advanced composites have been used to strengthen structures for the last twenty years, but only recently have these systems been detailed with advanced composite anchorage. There is currently no guidance provided in any codes or guidelines for the design and detailing of these anchors.  Only through structural testing have they been validated as critical requirements to achieving certain performance goals. This presentation will highlight the use of these materials for seismic retrofit and how these applications were able to keep structures in service after the 7.8 magnitude event near Wellington, New Zealand, in November of 2016. These structures sustained only minor damage while neighboring buildings were either taken completely out of service or marked for demolition. We will review some of the structural tests that led up to these designs and then discuss the main design and detailing requirements needed to implement them in the field. The presentation will also illustrate the damage caused by the event and the retrofit techniques that helped several structures remain in service.
