"Wharf Modifications Provide Improved Capabilities in the Gulf and Beyond"

The ever-evolving global maritime industry has required terminal owners to modernize existing marine terminals in the Gulf of Mexico and all over the world.  Many existing structures have been built in phases spanning over several years to several decades.  Structural design applications include review of dock structure configurations, various considerations for larger ships and cranes, and their overall impact to the facility.  Significant issues typically include increased water depths, increased equipment loads, and environmental loading criteria.  The presentation will include examples from a variety of wharf improvements and discuss some of the unique engineering and construction challenges. Barbours Cut Terminal owned and operated by the Port of Houston Authority is one example.  Barbours Cut consists of six Panamax-class container wharves totaling six thousand feet in overall length.  The structures were built in phases, beginning in the mid-1970’s and completed by the early 1990’s. The presentation will provide a general overview of wharf improvements which included review of the structural configuration of the wharf, consideration of enlarged ship and gantry crane sizes and their overall impact to the facility, effect of increased water depths, and coordination needed for utility modernization.
