As we all know, the incredible rainfall and resulting unprecedented floods from Hurricane Harvey late last summer had an enormous impact on the city of Houston and the surrounding areas of southeast Texas and western Louisiana. This event followed several other recent intense storms and floods that had a dramatic impact on the Houston area. Close to a year after Harvey, residents and businesses are still laboring to recover, and political struggles over how best to respond and prepare for future floods are ongoing and will be for some time to come. The Houston Geological Society has organized a technical conference to help address these issues. The basic aim of the conference is to provide scientific context behind the causes and effects of the floods, along with a critical examination of the efforts to mitigate the damage and deal with future occurrences.
