“The Use of Technology for Monitoring Adjacent Construction Influences.”

The railway industry, with minimal right of way, has demanded the use of accelerated bridge construction techniques for decades. Online replacement of bridge structures, including the construction of new foundations near existing foundations, while minimizing services interruptions, can be challenging. Constructing new substructure elements near existing substructure can be risky and requires a practical and effective monitoring plan to ensure the health of the existing structure during construction. This presentation will cover the evolution of monitoring techniques for online construction of railway bridges over the last twenty years. The Learning Objectives are as follows:

  • Understand the effect of adjacent construction on existing bridge foundations.
  • Learn effective monitoring techniques for adjacent bridge construction.
  • Considerations for incorporating a monitoring program into accelerated bridge construction (ABC) projects.
