March President's Message

President's Message - March 2019

February was a great month for our Branch and the Civil Engineering community. We celebrated and recognized many of our Branch’s Past Presidents during the monthly luncheon, it was an honor to have so many Past Presidents at the monthly meeting so thank you to all those who attended. Engineers Week was a success once again and congratulations to Manik Mitra, PE as the 2019 ASCE Houston Branch Young Engineer of the Year, and also to Harold Cobb, PE as the 2019 Houston Area Engineer of
the Year. I encourage everyone to help carry the momentum that E-week provides and look for opportunities throughout the year to positively impact our profession thru mentorship, educational outreach, and community involvement.

Thank you to Matt Zeve, PE who did a great job in filling in at the last minute for our scheduled keynote speaker Russ Poppe, PE after he was called in to a meeting in Austin just prior to our luncheon. Matt did a great job of informing us about HCFCD and answering the many questions our members had concerning projects, flooding, and regulations.

Springtime is busy for our K-12 outreach activities and volunteers are always needed so please be sure to contact [email protected] if you are interested in getting involved.

The Houston Branch has been successful in creating and maintaining several local institute chapters; COPRI, EWRI, G-I, SEI, T&DI. These institute chapters provide another avenue for ASCE members to become involved and meet other professionals who are interested in specialty areas of civil engineering. Two new institutes that some members have currently expressed interest in creating are AEI (Architectural Engineering Institute) and UESI (Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute). The ASCE Houston Branch is currently looking for more individuals to help in the effort to start these new institutes, so if you have any interest please contact us at [email protected]

This month’s Branch meeting is a lunch meeting at HESS, and our keynote speaker is Gary Trietsch (Executive Director, Harris County Toll Road Authority). We look forward to hearing about HCTRA’s recent and upcoming projects.

I am available for any questions or comments about the Houston Branch, so do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you at our next event. Thank you for your support of ASCE Houston Branch.

Luis A. González, PE
