February President's Message

What a great half of the ASCE year.  We’ve had an amazing lineup of great keynote speakers so far that provided us great updates and information for our membership; Mayor Turner (City of Houston), Hassan Sulehri (Houston Airport System), Mayor Zimmerman (City of Sugar Land), Mayor Foreman (City of Friendswood), and Andrea French (Transportation Advocacy Group).  Not to mention all the technical speakers that have graciously volunteered their time to present their projects and expertise at our monthly meetings.  Many thanks to all our speakers!

Now that we’ve finished the calendar year, just a friendly reminder that the Branch is still accepting corporate sponsorships for 2019.  Corporate sponsorships are a vital component of the Branch’s operating finances and we are truly thankful for all our sponsors.  If you have any questions regarding sponsorships, please contact

February means it is time for E-Week which will be February 17ththrough 23rd. The Houston Branch is involved and supports the events surrounding E-Week and we encourage all our members to find a way take part in the effort to increase awareness and educate the public of engineer’s positive contributions to our quality of life.  I would like to recognize Manik Mitra, PE as the Houston Branch Edmund Freidman Young Engineer of the Year.  Manik has been very active with the Houston Branch and is well-deserving of this award, congratulations Manik!

This month the Texas Section will hold their annual Legislative Drive-In in Austin.  The registration has closed, however if you are interested in being part of our Public Affairs committee and participating in future events please get in touch with us.  Another quick and easy way to get started is to sign up with ASCE’s ‘Key Contact’program.

The spring is the busiest time of the year for our Educational Outreach activities so if you are willing and able to volunteer for any of our upcoming events, it would be great to see you out there.  Some of our upcoming events in February and March are UH Resume Fair, MATHCOUNTS, Girls Exploring Math and Science, and Houston Children’s festival.  Contact vpeducation@ascehouston.orgif interested.

This month’s Branch meeting is a lunch meeting at HESS, and our keynote speaker is Russ Poppe (Executive Director, Harris County Flood Control District).  We look forward to hearing about HCFCD recent activities and planning.

I am available for any questions or comments about the Houston Branch, so do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you at our next event. Thank you for your support of ASCE Houston Branch.
