President's Message

I am very excited and honored to be serving ASCE as the 2018-2019 Houston Branch President. Let me first thank last year’s volunteers for all their hard work and success. I have been fortunate to find an amazing group of individuals to volunteer their time with me for the upcoming year and I am confident we will continue the great work that this Branch has done over the years. For any of you that want to get involved, we are always looking for volunteers so please get in touch with us!

Last month’s keynote speaker was City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner who reminded us about the upcoming November election Proposition "A" – ReBuild Houston, and Proposition "B" – Fire Union Petition.

Proposition "A" may sound familiar as voters approved the original ReBuild Houston program in 2010, however a judge has ruled that the City must hold a revote on the item due to the original ballot language. A vote FOR proposition "A" will reaffirm the ‘lockbox’ mechanism designed to ensure the funds from the associated fees will continue to be dedicated to drainage and street improvements. Should proposition "A" fail, these revenues would no longer be held in a ‘lockbox’ and may be used for purposes other than streets and drainage.

Be sure to head to the polls and cast your ballot! Early voting begins October 22nd and Election Day is November 6th.

This month’s Branch meeting is a dinner meeting at HESS, however due to unexpected circumstances we have re-scheduled Judge Hebert for our May Meeting at look forward to hearing about Fort Bend County in the spring.

We are fortunate that our keynote speaker for October will be Mr. Hassan Sulehri, Assistant Director-Infrastructure Controls for Houston Airport System (HAS). A big thank you goes out to HAS and Mr. Sulehri for agreeing to present at our meeting on short notice.

I am available for any questions or comments about the Houston Branch, so do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you at our next event. Thank you for your support of ASCE Houston Branch.
