Session 1: "Hike and Bike Trails (The How & Why)"

Hike and Bike Trails are becoming an integral part of Texas cities and provide some big benefits.  But there are a variety of options and challenges to be considered during their planning and design. This presentation will go over all of these aspects as well as some success stories and lessons learned.

Ms. Jennifer Walker, P.E., D.WRE, ENV SP, CFM, QSD, Principal Engineer, Watearth, Inc.Bio

Session 2: "Putting Stormwater Detention to Work: It isn’t Just for Flood Control Anymore"

Managing stormwater is a critical aspect of protecting life, property, and the environment as well as improving quality of life. Traditional stormwater infrastructure takes a lot of space yet it’s only in use a small fraction of time. As we work towards more thoughtful development, multiple uses for any development structure must be considered. Our projects must work harder for water quality, stormwater management, recreation, and aesthetics. This presentation provides strategies for incorporating multiple uses into stormwater facilities using local examples. Knowing about and understanding existing guidance helps project designers and owners incorporate forward-thinking principals for low impact development and multiple uses. Ms. Walker will discuss available guidance including the recently completed City of Houston Multi-Use Detention Technical Paper and the City of Austin Stormwater Criteria. Additionally, she will provide project examples from Houston, other Texas cities, and Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) projects include water conservation Best Management Practices (BMPs), Natural Channel Design, and reservoir sedimentation studies.
