9th Annual Golf Tournament On Friday, May 9th at 8:00 am, the Younger Members will be hosting the 9th Annual ASCE Golf Tournament to benefit our scholarship fund for our local universities. The four team scramble-style tourney will be held at the Cypresswood Golf Course. Burgers and Chicken will be served during lunch and snacks and beverages will be provided during tournament play. Bring your friends, clients or coworkers and join us for all the fun! Registration fees are $100 for individuals, $50 for government employees and $50 for students. Registration is open until April 30th and late registration ends May 7th (Additional $10 fee applies). There are also sponsoring opportunities that range from our Bronze level ($150) to our Platinum level ($750). Graduation Picnic: On Saturday, May 1st we met at Memorial park for our annual Graduation Picnic for students at our local universities. There were around 12 attendees, which included students from both University of Houston and Rice. We enjoyed the nice weather along with more than enough barbeque to go around. The students gladly took with them all of the leftovers we had. Special thanks to Gareth Young and Julio Salinas for putting on this event. Congratulations to all of the Graduates! ECH Leadership Seminar: On Saturday, February 27th, four Younger members went to a Leadership seminar put on for several local engineering societies. The event was held at the new Houston Natural Science Museum in Sugarland. We helped share ideas on what we think young engineers want and also developed ways that all of the societies can work together effectively. September 2009 President's Message

We had another excellent August joint meeting with the Houston Contractors Association (HCA). Mayor Bill White delivered a very informative discussion on the local economy, the outlook for infrastructure spending, and the debate surrounding the use of tax incentive reinvestment zones (TIRZs). Connard Barker, president of HCA, and Brian Manning, P.E. did a great job organizing and leading the meeting. Through Brian’s efforts, our HCA-ASCE joint meeting has become a great summer tradition. September marks a new beginning for the Houston Branch. At our upcoming branch meeting, we will recognize our outgoing officers and committee chairs, and install our new branch leadership. I’m confident that the branch will achieve great things under the direction of its new president, Andrea Cheng Ranft, P.E. Andrea’s many years of involvement with ASCE and her leadership experience will guide us well in the coming year. Moreover, she’ll be assisted by an outstanding group of board officers...
