President's Message

How fast the year is going by!  April marked the halfway point of the Branch’s year and I think it’s a good time to look back on some of our accomplishments so far, but also look ahead of all we have left to accomplish this year.

We were pleased to welcome the ASCE President, Ms. Kristina Swallow, P.E., ENV SP, F.ASCE and Executive Director Mr. Thomas Smith, ENV SP, CAE, F.ASCE to Houston this past month as they attended the 2018 Offshore Technology Conference.  2018 marks the 50th year of OTC and the Houston Branch is pleased to host the ASCE Global President and Executive Director when they visit each year.  While I was unable to attend the reception this year, I understand that a great time was had by all.

The Houston Branch wrapped up our pledge drive to purchase copies of Dream Big to place in local area schools.  With the generous support of our members, the Branch, and a partial match by ASCE Global, we were able to purchase 959 copies of this great film to place in schools throughout the 12-County region that the Branch covers!  Your support will ensure that every middle school in our region will receive a free copy of Dream Big along with additional copies to be distributed to all of the school districts to circulate amongst their other campuses.  I cannot express how pleased we are by the outflow of support for this great K-12 outreach initiative.

April also marked the inaugural event of the Houston Chapter of the Transportation and Development Institute.  We continue to have incredibly strong institute chapters in Houston with all of them being extremely active.  Please be on the lookout for information on upcoming events meeting and please reach out to Mr. Uttam Karmaker, our VP-Technical, at vptechnical@ascehouston.org if you are interested in getting involved or for more information on our institutes.

We would like to once again thank our April Keynote Speaker Mr. Jeff Linder, Director of Flood Operations Program, Harris County Flood Control District.  We also would like to again thank or  as well as our Technical Speakers Ms. Anita Hollmann, Program Manager, Houston Public Works, Mr. David Parkhill, P.E., D.WRE, Director of Raw Water Enterprise, San Jacinto River Authority and Ms. Spandana Tummuri, Technical Engineer, San Jacinto River Authority .

We hope you join us at the May Branch meeting where we are pleased to welcome Mr. Roger Guenther, Executive Director of the Port of Houston Authority.  The Technical Sessions wil begin at 11:00 at HESS followed by our lunch meeting at noon.  We hope to see you there.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any suggestions, ideas, or would like to help out.  We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming Branch event or meeting.
